<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Have you ever had
a moment when the eventualities of life cause you more stress than they should?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Of course, there
is a certain amount of stress that we face that is good for us, but it is often
that stresses build up, situations get out of hand, and the body is taxed
beyond its normal limits.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">What do you do
when the stresses of life go beyond your physical and emotional capacities?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Do you let them
get you down?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Do you let them cause
you physical damage?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Do you let them build
up until they emerge an emotional outbursts?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">As I said earlier,
there are normal amounts of stress that each of us faces on a daily basis and
which are actually good for us. These may include deadlines to be met,
presentations to be prepared and delivered, and meetings to be attended and
managed.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">But there are
other stresses that can be harmful if improperly or inadequately dealt with.
These may include emergencies, accidents, and forgotten preparations.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">And many times,
some of these are avoidable. Proper planning certainly can inhibit undue
stress. Extra care can often eliminate accidents and emergencies. Better
communication can prevent misunderstandings.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">But even with
these precautions, stresses still can build up.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">So I believe that
God has given us one (and only one) sure-fire way to combat stresses in our
lives.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">“Give all your worries
and cares to God, for He cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7 NLT).</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Worries, cares, anxieties, and concerns: these are what the
Bible most often calls the stresses of our lives. These are the things we need
to leave in God’s care. And when we leave them in His care, that doesn’t mean
that we simply neglect them and stay hands off; it does mean, however, that we
leave the “worries” about them in God’s hands. It means that He is the One Who
is working things out. We still pay the bills. We still participate in the
meetings. We still work through the preparations. BUT … </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">We don’t stress. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">We don’t fret. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">We don’t lose sleep over the issues of life; </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Instead, we let Him do the “worrying.”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">And that’s somewhat humorous, because we know that God
doesn’t fret over things. Instead, “<b>…</b> we know that God causes everything
to work together<sup> </sup>for the good of those who love [Him] and are called
according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28 NLT).</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">God has His own agenda for our cares and concerns … and as we
follow Him, </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">We will see that the stresses are resolved</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">We will see that situations are taken care of in a godly and
timely manner</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">And we will see that God receives all the glory.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="background: white; color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Here is what Jesus had to say about all of this in Matthew
6:24-34</span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">No one can serve
two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to
one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.</span></span><span style="color: black;"></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">That is why I tell
you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or
enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than
clothing?</span></span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns,
for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to Him
than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?</span></span><span style="color: black;"></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">And why worry about
your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t
work or make their clothing,</span></span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.</span></span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">And if God cares so wonderfully for
wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will
certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?</span></span><span style="color: black;"></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">So don’t worry
about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we
wear?’</span></span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">These things dominate the thoughts of
unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.</span></span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">Seek the Kingdom of God</span></span><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">above all else, and live righteously, and He
will give you everything you need.</span></span><span style="color: black;"></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">So don’t worry
about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is
enough for today (Matthew 6:24-34 NLT).</span></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">And so, I encourage
you this day.</span></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">Let’s reduce the
stress.</span></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">Let’s reduce the
worry.</span></span></p>
<p style="background: white; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in;"><span class="woj"><span style="color: black;">Let’s cast our
cares upon the One who cares for us.</span></span></p>

I guess I'm really getting older.<br />
I have NEVER faced such difficulty in re-acclimating to my US time and routine. The flight to and from Israel, by way of Istanbul, has taken its toll.<br />
I have worked really hard to establish a routine of blogging every Monday BUT, that went all out the door on this trip -- and a fabulous trip it was -- but I am exhausted.<br />
31 of us made this journey. Everyone expected something different -- yet each expected the same thing: we wanted to walk where Jesus walked. We wanted to see the sights where events of the Bible really happened. (and yet, some want to see archaeology. Some wanted to float in the Dead Sea. Some wanted to taste the fabulous foods of the Middle East -- and some -- wanted to shop.)<br />
Regardless, we all came away fulfilled.<br />
But as a way of helping me to segue back into daily reality, I want to post a devotion that my wife and I had written for our visit to Bethlehem. Let it speak to you as you read.<br />
<br />
<b>Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem.</b><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The building of the Church of the
Nativity is the oldest standing church in the Holy Land.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Underneath its present floor are beautiful
mosaics of the earlier church. (I actually saw some beautiful mosaics on previous trips to Israel that had been excavated … they were
amazing!) According to tradition, Mary gave birth to Jesus at the place where
the star is located on the floor of the Church of the Nativity. The tradition that the birth was in a cave is
one of the oldest Christian traditions. It has been stated that the cave of
Jesus’ birth was pointed out in His day and no doubt is the same place where
this church was erected.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">To the
east of the city is believed to be the area of the fields of the shepherds
“keeping watch over their flocks by night”. Several churches have also been
built there to commemorate this event. Even today local shepherds can be seen
tending their flock in this same area. As a matter of fact, on my last visit to
the Holy Land, we met some of these shepherds who have made it a business to
charge to have pictures made of them and the sheep in that field. (We were told by one vendor, "We love Americans -- and the more you spend, the more we love you.") </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none; text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">But the scene to the Shepherds at the birth of Jesus, happened in this manner:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<i><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">Luke
2:8-20 – That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding
their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and
the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the
angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that
will bring great joy to all people. The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord –
has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him
by this sign: “You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in
a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others – the armies
of heaven – praising God and saying,</span></i></div>

<i><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">“Glory
to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is
pleased.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When the angels had returned
to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Let’s see this thing that has happened, which
the Lord has told us about.” They hurried to the village and found Mary and
Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. After seeing him, the
shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them
about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary
kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. The shepherds
went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard
and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.</span></i></div>

we take home with us from Bethlehem? A few things cross my mind…</span></i></div>

</span></span></span><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">Bethlehem
was chosen by God to host the birth of the King. God has chosen us, He picked
us out as His very own to host King Jesus in our own hearts.</span></div>

<i><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">Ephesians
1:4 – Even as (in His love) He chose us (actually picked us out for Himself as
His own) in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy
(consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above
reproach, before Him in love.</span></i></div>

was a “little” town yet Jesus, God in the flesh, came to dwell in it. God is
not looking for “big” people who have it all together, who look a certain way
or who talk a certain way … that have money, status, gifting, or personality.
He is looking for ordinary people such as you and me. He wants to come and
dwell in us, to take up residence in “little ‘ole’ us”.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<i><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">Micah
5:2-- But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the
people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins
are from the distant past.</span></i></div>

<i><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN;">I
Corinthians 3:16-- Do you not discern and understand that you are God’s temple
(His sanctuary), and that God’s Spirit has His permanent dwelling in you (to be
a home in you, collectively as a church and also individually)?</span></i></div>

the Christmas story we see “be not afraid”. The angel told Mary to not be afraid
… the angel told Joseph not to be afraid and the angels told the shepherds not
to be afraid. God is saying that to us TODAY. Don’t be afraid to step out into
your calling and your destiny and your purpose! He is with us in everything and
through everything. Be Strong! Be brave! Don’t be afraid. Your God is with us
everywhere we go! Glory to God in the highest!</span></div>

1:9- “Remember that I commanded you to be strong and brave, Don’t be afraid,

of us tend to want to idolize places like Bethlehem and events and moves of
God.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He simply wants us to” idolize”
Him: to love Him with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. That is the
GREATEST commandment. And when we do that His presence shines through us to
others to see Him and be drawn to Him.</span></div>

We leave Columbus, OH, head to O'Hare in Chicago, to Istanbul, Turkey, and then to Tel Aviv, Israel.<br />

It is my goal to simply celebrate the season, celebrate the birth of Jesus, celebrate the friendships I have, and celebrate the family I have.</p> <p>There are always many discussion concerning the real birthdate of Jesus. Certainly, many have attempted to deduce the birthdate but truthfully, we will never know. Could it have been December 25? Possibly, but there are 364 other days it could have been too. The Catholic church, (you know, the one from which most of us “descended”) has laid claim to the December 25 date since before the middle of the fourth century. And many of the Orthodox church hold that the birth occurred on January 6. The reasons for these dates are many but typically relate to the dates of the Passover season or the Feast of Tabernacles and the sentiment during the middle fourth century that dates and events were cyclical and occurred with relation to each other.</p> <p>Of course other theories abound, including the concept that the Church borrowed the dates from pagan practices of the times. While this sounds good and feasible … and even diabolically conspiratory … all probability points away from this because the early Church was a body of people which chose to steer far away from anything pagan. In other words, they would adapt the current gods of a conquered land into their own panorama of gods, and this even included the adaptation of certain buildings purposed for the worship of these gods into the worship of other gods. We can see this in the invasion of Israel by the Romans. Israel could have bowed under Rome’s pressure like every other country did EXCEPT that Israel WAS NOT willing to incorporate their God into the Roman worship of many gods; they KNEW that God Himself had declared that He was THE ONLY God, that He was ONE, and that Israel should worship NO OTHER. Therefore, the Jews WOULD NOT abide by the addition of other gods and customs because of their reverence and fear of the one, true God.</p> <p>So, although Christmas now occurs in the season of year that is recognized as a season of Saturnalia and other pagan practices related to the solstice, it probably originated as a December 25 (or January 6) celebration purely out of respect and desire to honor Christ. </p> <p>Again, if we choose to celebrate Him all year long, we will definitely cross some days that coincide with pagan celebrations … so don’t worry too much about it.</p> <p>Another controversy that takes place at this time of year is that of the place of the birth of <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-gxemv1zEi2M/VJnlWwKP_xI/AAAAAAAADjs/_t5JQnq3o3s/s1600-h/jesus%252520birth%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="jesus birth" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="jesus birth" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB-BQ99VdN68ja2TLNmmj0KgCRBiCT66AxNu4PcH7NsNg6XIjywbQYCZavqF72iF3ptVLr2Tq36Lloihr8uLnuO-sefeJzqY3PdKoDxEkut1muEQ87TfScXylSW15acZSKcT9W/?imgmax=800" width="269" align="right" height="210"></a>Christ. Some say that there was no room for Him in the inn, others say there was no private room for Him in the family household, and others say there was no available space in the family guest room. In all probability, a more proper understanding of the place of His birth is that it DID occur in a home, although it more accurately took place in the animal-keeping area of the home … probably under the house in a hollowed out place. It might even have been a natural cave that a house was built upon … the main thing is that it was a place where animals were kept. It was dirty. It was lowly. It was smelly. But it was a portrait that the Messiah was born to relate to all humankind.</p> <p>I have had the privilege to go to Israel three times. I have seen two different places that tradition says were the burial places for Christ. I have seen at least two places where he was said to have been born in … one being a church and the other being a cave. I am told that there are other places where He might have been born and where He might have been buried. (By the way, in both places claiming to be the Tomb, He is not in either one … His IS RISEN!)</p> <p>The point with ALL of this is that we need to simply worship the savior, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. It is often rumored that this song was originally a coded reference to the Catholic catechism in order to veil their persecution by the Church of England. Another version of this story is that the song was again, used as a hidden message, but this time between believers in societies where the Gospel was frowned upon or outlawed. According to Snopes.com, however, these are popular rumors that have little to no substance. </p> <p>There are however, surface truths that we can gather from this song: It DOES concern the 12 days between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi (or wise men.) Additionally, it probably grew into a song as a game where competitors would add various verses while repeating all previous stanzas until one player “messed up” a previous line. We DO have record of it as a song as far back as 1780 although it surely is much older than that. Of course, and I know that I am very prone to spiritualize things … even to over-spiritualize them … but I think there is perhaps even more that we can derive from this song. </p> <p>On the initial glance, I want to observe the rumored meanings because I do think the song can help us to understand various aspects of our relationships with God and with fellow believers. </p> <p>Perhaps each of the gifts could mentally correlate with teachings of the faith. Against such things there is no law. Many have used songs, poems, even decks of cards … so why not use the song, the 12 Days of Christmas as a device to remind ourselves of various aspects of our faith. And this Christmas, while we focus our attention on Christ as the infant, let’s also remember that He is the Risen Lord and the Conquering King and that He has surrounded us with a whole multitude of examples, witnesses, and relationships.. </p> <blockquote> <p>Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.<b><sup>5 </sup></b>He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant. They are a commercial station which means that commercials are interspersed throughout their daily playlists. That’s not a problem; that is how they are sponsored and I get that. However, there are a few commercials that play throughout the day that feature one of these “hey-let’s-rattle-off-the-legal-details-as-quickly-as-we-can-because-it-has-to-take-place-but-we-don’t-want-to-take-up-precious-airspace-for-those-important-but-minute-details.” When I hear these, I am quickly made aware that these folks are rendering their own version of what is really important for Christmas. One of these ads tells me that they KNOW what my wife wants for Christmas; diamond jewelry. Another soon beckons that I NEED a new car for Christmas. These are all days when retailers supposedly offer their best pricing for the entire year. What actually takes place though, is that we see signs of the self-indulgent greediness of our modern society. It made sense when he told me that and it makes sense now. There are many parallels to this statement but the recurring truth is simple, profound, and applicable: the means, shows, glamour, glitz, flash, money … whatever … that we use to draw people to us, to our churches, to our homes, to our stores, etc. are the recurring ‘cards’ that will have to be played in order to keep those people coming again and again. <p>I’m pretty sure that each of us can relate to this statement. <p>Maybe we drew friends close to us by the way that we spent money on them. Maybe we attracted hundreds and thousands to our shows by the features we continually blitzed past them. Maybe we attracted masses to our restaurants by the service and consistent quality of food we presented to them. (And by the way, that’s NOT a bad thing at all.) Maybe as musicians, we continually presented the listeners with punch and ‘tight’ music in a way that habitually explored new horizons. Or maybe we built our churches by being on the edge, trying new things, and bringing in big name speakers, <p>What I’m saying to these and other approaches, is that this things you used in order to draw people to you ARE THE SAME THINGS you are going to have to use in order to keep them coming. <p>Please note, this IS NOT necessarily a judgment call (but by the same token, if you feel judged or convicted … then maybe it IS such a call … to you.) One of my favorite music bands is a group known simply as ‘The Rippingtons.’ They began 28 years ago as a guitarist assembled around him a group of hot, experienced, and talented musicians who were very tight in their sound and who were explorers of new traditions of music. After all these years, they continue in this same vein. They are often criticized, mind you, because they never stay the same but continue to explore and branch out in their various arts. (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>It is a known and proven fact that we cannot plant a seed of corn and expect from that kernel a plant of green beans to grow. This is called the law or principle of sowing and reaping. <p>We must respect and acknowledge that, in the natural realm, whatever we put into something is indicative of what we will attain from that effort/deed. Granted, there have been moments when we may have mistakenly put great efforts into something that we deemed as worthy … only to see that particular something founder and fail. But generally, the things we pay attention to, the things we put efforts into, the things that we spend time and perhaps, money, on … these are the things that will grow and prosper. <p>If we as parents will spend more time with our children (and make THAT time both quantity and quality time), the better those children’s future will be. <p>If we as husbands/wives will pay the needed attention to our mates … through listening, adoring, and just BEING with them, the greater and more beautiful benefits we will receive from that attention spent. Our marriages will be better. Someone is watching us. Someone will read about us or hear about us through a story. <p>Our families are greatly influenced by us. <p>We are important. <p>The musical group Kansas once sang a song, ‘Dust in the Wind.’ While some have interpreted this song to mean that our lives are short and meaningless, others have (correctly … I think) understood the song to mean that although life may be short, and that each of us will return to the dust from which we have come, our future lies outside of ourselves and more importantly, in the hands of a Savior. <p>It IS important that we acknowledge that we are a part of something greater than us … and that something greater is a future. <p>That future is dictated by the responses we make to the ‘cards’ we have been dealt. <p>That future is positioned by the investments we make (or not). <p>That future is granted based upon the decisions we make in this brief life. <p>And that future is sealed by the ultimate decision we make concerning Jesus Christ. <p>Let’s all consider our present … with an eye for the future … not for the purpose of worrying about that future, but for the purpose of intentionally assuring a good future. I am always fascinated by individuals that are continually trying to fit things, stuff, people, deeds, etc. into an area of life where only one thing fits and works. The great philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal once said, </font></p> <blockquote> <p align="left"><font face="Times New Roman">What else does this craving and this helplessness proclaim but that there was once in a man a true happiness of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? Guard against every kind of greed. We can attempt to insert “August” in the slot that will only accept “08” all that we want but there is still only one thing that will fit in that particular box.</font> </p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">We can attempt to insert any key … or a key that “looks” like a good way (i.e. a different religion or philosophy … or even the performance of good works) and we will continue to find that it is only God and His grace that fit the slot, that fit the lockset, that fill the vacuum in each of our lives.</font> </p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">I want to encourage each one today to know that Jesus Christ is our ONLY answer and that the application of His grace in our lives is the ONLY way to true relationship with God. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">While other things MAY have a<em> place</em>, it is ultimately … and ONLY Jesus that makes the real difference in our lives.</font> </p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">So as you wander on this journey of life, appreciate the gifts, appreciate the things, appreciate the friends, and appreciate the opportunities.</font> </p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">BUT don’t waste time on the religions. These may include deadlines to be met, presentations to be prepared and delivered, and meetings to be attended and managed. <p>But there are other stresses that can be harmful if improperly dealt with. These may include emergencies, accidents, and forgotten preparations. <p>And many of these are avoidable. Proper planning certainly can inhibit undue stress. Extra care can often eliminate accidents and emergencies. Better communication can prevent misunderstandings. <p>But even with these precautions, stresses still can build up. <p>So I believe that God has given us one (and only one) sure-fire way to combat stresses in our lives. <p>“Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7 NLT). <p>Worries, cares, anxieties, and concerns: these are what the Bible most often calls the stresses of our lives. These are the things we need to leave in God’s care. And when we leave them in His care, that doesn’t mean that we simply neglect them and stay hands off; it does mean, however, that we leave the “worries” about them in God’s hands. It means that He is the One Who is working things out. We still pay the bills. We still participate in the meetings. We still work through the preparations. BUT … we don’t stress. We don’t fret. Instead, “<b><sup>…</sup></b> we know that God causes everything to work together<sup> </sup>for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28 NLT). <p>God has His own agenda for our cares and concerns … and as we follow Him, we will see that the stresses are resolved, that situations are taken care of in a godly and timely manner, and that God receives all the glory. <p>Here is what Jesus had to say about all of this in Matthew 6:24-34 <blockquote> <p>No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. <p>That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to Him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? <p>And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (NLT). <p>2) <b>Let’s pray with a fervency greater than we have ever known. </b><a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James%205:16&version=NLT">James 5:16</a> reminds us that God DOES hear the pleas of His people- “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results” (NLT). That means that if we will really mean business with God, He means business with us. He hears us. He answers us. <p>Go ahead, lose sleep while you’re praying. <p>Go ahead, weep some tears while you’re praying. <p>Go ahead, see God move while you’re praying. <p>3) <b>Let’s do our part in the trust process</b>. Solomon had just finished the construction of the Temple and God appeared to him in the night with certain words. (2 Chronicles 7:11-22) Among these words, God set forth some conditional statements. He told Solomon that there would be times of disaster and horror in the earth. And then He introduced a VERY IMPORTANT word, “Then”. <p>“Then” means “at that time” or “in that given event.” In other words, God was telling Solomon that difficult times would still be ahead … but that WAS NOT time to turn FROM God; instead, it was time to turn to Him as never before. 2 Chronicles 7:14- “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land” (NLT). <p>So God sets this before His chosen people who are called by His Name: <p>A) They are to humble themselves. This means that they are to recognize WHO God is and in turn, they are to recognize who they are. They are, in fact, nothing without Him. <p>B) They are to pray. Not only are they to speak with God BUT they are to listen to God, and they are to be willing to respond accordingly to what He tells them. <p>C) They are to seek God’s face. Remember, this was written to the people who had heard the following blessing often: <p>‘May the Lord bless you and protect you.<br>May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.<br>May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’ (Numbers 6:24-26 NLT) <p>They equated the Face of God with the favor and grace of God. So in other words, they were to seek His face or His favor in their lives, in their people, and in their land. <p>D) They are to repent. They are to turn from their wicked ways. And in this sense, wickedness is further stretched to mean ALL thoughts, words, and actions that are displeasing to God. They are to change their ways of thinking AND their corresponding actions. <p>E) And in turn, God will heal their land. <p>Now many would tell us that this is Old Testament and therefore, no longer applicable to God’s people. But Jesus NEVER disavowed the Old Testament; in fact, He Himself told us that He came to fulfill or complete the Old Testament. Rosa Parks saw her opportunity AND she moved upon that opportunity (or in her case, she stayed, because of frustration and anger at the abuses she and those like her had suffered.} She stated that she was "tired of giving in.” <p>that reminds me of a biblical character, Gideon. Gideon, known as a Hebrew Judge or leader, almost missed his opportunity. <blockquote> <p>Judges 6: 11-16- “Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” </p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p>“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” </p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p>Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” <p>“But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!” <p>The Lord said to him, “I will be with you. The armies of Midian were camped north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. Bring them down to the spring, and I will test them to determine who will go with you and who will not.” When Gideon took his warriors down to the water, the Lord told him, “Divide the men into two groups. In one group put all those who cup water in their hands and lap it up with their tongues like dogs. In the other group put all those who kneel down and drink with their mouths in the stream.” Only 300 of the men drank from their hands. All the others got down on their knees and drank with their mouths in the stream. <p>The Lord told Gideon, “With these 300 men I will rescue you and give you victory over the Midianites. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” </p></blockquote> <p> <p>So with this in mind, I k\now want to ask you: How’s your Prayer-life going? <p><a name="DeveloperInfo">Many people don't know that Rosa Parks was a strong and devout Christian, and that it was her faith that gave her the strength to do what she did that day in 1955.</a> <p>Read here Parks’ words regarding her faith in Jesus: <blockquote> <p>"Every day before supper and before we went to services on Sundays, my grandmother would read the Bible to me, and my grandfather would pray. We even had devotions before going to pick cotton in the fields. Prayer and the Bible, became a part of my everyday thoughts and beliefs. I learned to put my trust in God and to seek Him as my strength." </p></blockquote> <p>So I want to ask you again, “How’s your prayer life?” <p>Gideon, too, had a vibrant prayer life that not only sought God … but heard from Him as well. <blockquote> <p>Judges 7:8-15- “So Gideon collected the provisions and rams’ horns of the other warriors and sent them home. Listen to what the Midianites are saying, and you will be greatly encouraged. Then you will be eager to attack.” <p>So Gideon took Purah and went down to the edge of the enemy camp. The armies of Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east had settled in the valley like a swarm of locusts. Their camels were like grains of sand on the seashore—too many to count! Gideon crept up just as a man was telling his companion about a dream. The man said, “I had this dream, and in my dream a loaf of barley bread came tumbling down into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent, turned it over, and knocked it flat!” <p>His companion answered, “Your dream can mean only one thing—God has given Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite, victory over Midian and all its allies!” <p>When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship before the Lord. He started out with 32,000 soldiers. (We don’t know exactly how many Midianites they were facing but according to Judges 8:10, there were at least 135,000.) Gideon had pared his men initially down to 10,000. But God still wanted fewer men in Gideon’s army. These were pared down further, to 300. <p>God’s ways and ideas are much higher than ours. <blockquote> <p>Isaiah 55:8-9- ““My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord, “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.<b></b> <p>For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.””<b></b> (NLT).</p></blockquote> <p>God wants the glory for His fights. <blockquote> <p>Judges 7:2- “The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength.” (NLT).</p></blockquote> <p>And in like manner, God wants the glory in your and my life too. <p>Rosa Parks was convinced that she had a right. And because of that, she refused to get up. I like them on hamburgers. I like them on other sandwiches. And I even like them simply as tomato sandwiches.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">I like them as a juice. I like them in ketchup. I like them in salsa. And I like them in other sauces as well.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">I like them in salads. I like them as fried green tomatoes. And I even like them raw (when they’re good and juicy.)</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">I recently picked up six cases of tomatoes and was amazed at their flavor and beauty.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Tomatoes originated in the Andes Mountains of South America and spread throughout the western hemisphere and eventually, the entire world after the Spanish began their exploration of the world.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Tomatoes are interesting because most individuals think of them as vegetables but in reality, the tomato is a fruit. (I think the fact that tomatoes are not “sweet” causes many to think this way.) To further complicate this issue, the state of Arkansas has named the tomato as both the state fruit AND the state vegetable. </font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Times New Roman">And yet, the thing that I want to feature about tomatoes here is this fact: tomatoes are often harvested “early” or in an unripe state. This means that they are usually harvested while they are still green, before they turn red and are deemed as ripe. We often equate ripeness with readiness to be used and enjoyed. I think there is a parallel here with the Christ-follower, especially for the new believer. Often, it is believed that a new believer cannot be fully used by God because s/he is new, unknowledgeable concerning the faith, and, in fact, a novice. But I believe that EVERY believer can and should be used of God. This place is certainly a bit of a haven for the kids … and also for the various animals. There are koi, chipmunks, cats, a couple of dogs … and two pigeons, Hope and Harmony. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">Hope and Harmony come and go as they please … but they seem to love being here. In fact, it is nothing for them to eat out of the hands of the children or to stay overnight in the greenhouse on the property.</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">As we were all sitting out on the courtyard, I saw the two birds perched on the roof of one of the houses. My initial thought, as I was pondering how much these birds obviously love this place and feel welcome here, was: “Why don’t we build them a house of their own?”</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">Immediately, I was reminded of the Scripture surrounding the narrative we know as the “Transfiguration.”</font></p> <blockquote> <p><font face="Times New Roman">Matthew 17:1-6- “Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials[</font><a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+17&version=NLT#fen-NLT-23681a"><font face="Times New Roman">a</font></a><font face="Times New Roman">]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. …” (NLT)</font></p></blockquote> <p><font face="Times New Roman">And it was as if I could hear the Father saying to me, “I have sent these birds here for several reasons. One of those reasons is this: that you might be reminded that I am pleased with this place and with the ministries it is carrying out to these children, the community, and indeed, the whole world.” </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">Certainly, there are many other truths that we can derive from this narrative BUT I am encouraged to look only at this one right for the time being. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">What is truly done for Christ is what is blessed. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">God empowers us to perform those tasks to which He has called us. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">And He speaks over us, “These are my beloved children who bring great joy to me.” </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">I am not attempting to take the power of the Matthew 17 passage away from the words it speaks concerning Jesus Christ; it certainly speaks to His divine purpose … but I want each of us to know and to understand that God truly loves us. He is pleased with us … not because of anything we do or have done … but because of what Jesus has already done … because of Who Jesus is.</font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">And He is pleased with the ministries to which He has called us. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">And He empowers us to perform those ministries. </font></p> <p><font face="Times New Roman">That makes me really excited about what God is doing in me, in the ministries in which I am engaged, about what God is doing in you, and in the ministries in which you are engaged. Of course they each bring things of interest to the table and I learn greatly from them as horizons are broadened. <p>Recently, one of my college students from a Latin American country wrote me a requested paper concerning freedom and what it means. It was interesting that she (and others) determined that the USA is not a free country because we have to follow certain laws, while persons in her and other countries did not have to follow certain laws. <p>She brought up the idea that children could drink if they wanted to in her country … without fear of being arrested. She also brought up the idea that persons in her country did not have to pay taxes, and therefore, when coming here to the USA, they felt that they could certainly take advantage of the system here because, in their frame of reference, the requirements that we have are of no concern. <p>Now please note, she was not being belligerent, nor was she being argumentative; in fact, she was even supportive of the opinion that she was stating; she was simply stating a fact. <p>I was amazed. It never occurred to me WHY people were doing what they were doing and acting like they were acting. And I had to stop and think for a minute: I wonder what would happen to our thinking IF we could take the time to try and understand why others acted, responded, and spoke out like they do. <p>And again, this is not an attempt to get us to pardon wrongs done to and within our country; it is to cause us to stop, listen to them, see where they are coming from, and then make the judgment that needs to be made. Of course, this is in complete contrast to the way that we sometimes do things. You know, see something we don’t like and then rant and rave about it. <p>Maybe what we need is a little more understanding. <p>Maybe we need a little more caring. <p>Maybe we need a lot less “jumping to conclusions.” <p>It may or may not change our thoughts. <p>It may or may not change our responses. <p>But it certainly will change our understanding. <p>It certainly will change our perspective. <p>And it certainly will change our attitudes. <p>Certainly there is a lot more that could be said about this, and perhaps more will be in the future, but for now, be challenged by the idea of giving others a chance. She was telling me that she had once began her studies to become a veterinarian but gave up because she was having too many difficulties with the studies. She obviously does have a learning difficulty but she had determined that her difficulty was simply too hard to carry on with her task so decided to lower her expectations a little to switch and become a veterinary technician. <p>As she was telling me her new goals, which she has been working on for about a year now, you could visibly see her lighten up and you could hear the excitement in her voice. In fact, she told me that wanted to tell many people of her new goal in life. <p>The excitement I heard, and that I related back to her, was her passion. She was iterating her passion. And it was contagious. <p>I have no doubt that Amanda will go on to finish her studies and will become a veterinary technician. <p>And I am pretty sure that she will specialize beyond that. <p>Why? <p>Because she was and is in the zone of her passion. <p>Passion is that objective that you have to have. You eat it, drink it, dream it ... and live it. <p>And passion will carry you through in times when otherwise you might want to quit or give up. <p>And I know passion. <p>And I think we all know passion. <p>When is the last time you ever dreamed something so hard that you couldn't let it go? <p>When's the last time that you really lit up when you were talking about something ... or someone? <p>When is the last time that you wanted something so badly that you knew you couldn't live without it? <p>That's passion. <p>A story is often told of a young boy who desperately wanted to learn a martial art. It is said that he sought out the training of a wise, old sensei. <p>In the boy's search of the old man, he did find him. And he found him fishing in the middle of a stream. <p>The boy waited patiently on the side of the stream for what seemed like hours ... simply in pursuit of being recognized by the old man. <p>Finally, the old man looked over at the boy and said to him, "boy, what is it that you desire?" <p>The boy anxiously responded to him, "Oh great master, I desire to learn your martial arts." <p>The old man simply looked away and continued fishing ... seemingly ignoring the young boy. <p>After a while longer, he again looked over at the young boy and said, "boy, what is it that you desire?" <p>Again, the boy responded, "Oh great master, I desire to learn your martial arts." <p>And again, the old man simply looked away and continued fishing. <p>Finally, after another hour or so, the old man looked over at the boy and said to him, "boy, what is it that you desire?" <p>And, as the boy had before responded, he said "Oh great master, I desire to learn your martial arts." <p>The old man motioned for the boy to come out into the water with him. <p>The boy, desiring NOT to show his excitement, waded out into the water to the old man. <p>When the boy reached the sensei, the sensei violently grabbed, pushed, and held the young boy's head under the water. <p>The boy struggled violently as well. <p>..until at last, four bubbles come from his mouth <p>...then three bubbles <p>...then two bubbles <p>... then one bubble <p>At which the old man, grabbing the boy by the hair, lifted him out of the water ... obviously (and literally) dying for air. <p>And the old man looked at the boy and said to him, "Son, when you want to learn the martial arts from me ... as much as you wanted that next breath of air ... come back and I will teach you. <p>This is an illustration of the power of passion. <p>Passion causes us to come back when all Hell is coming against us. <p>Passion is that thing that causes us to NOT give up when nothing else seems to be going our way. <p>Passion is what finds us successful. <p>Why? <p>Because passion creates within us an "I've got to have it ... or die trying" attitude. <p>So again, I ask each reader today ... what are you passionate about? Historical temperature and snowfall-level records were broken and new ones were set. And schools in my area surpassed their allotted levels of cancellations several times over. Some have even said that the students are going to have to go well into the summer break in order to make up for those cancellations.</p> <p>And many people continually fussed about the depth of the cold. In fact, it seems that complaints about the winter of 2014 far exceeded the appreciations.</p> <p>But I chose to take a different tack. This year, I am learning to count my blessings and to appreciate the winter, the cold, the snow, and all other parts of life. In fact, for four weekends in a row, my wife and I had to travel between Chicago and Toledo round-trip. We experienced icy roads, sub-zero temperatures, white-out conditions, cars and trucks driving too fast and dangerously, and a doubling of travel times.</p> <p>But rather than complain, I learned (and am still learning) to embrace this winter. I learned (and am still learning) to appreciate the cold, the snow, the wind, and the long travel times. </p> <p>Why?</p> <p>Because the Bible tells us that we are to focus on “what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT) </p> <p>Our attitudes must be transformed from the negative, sorrowful ones that many display into that which is full of hope, purpose, and vision. In fact, one of my favorite Christmas movies expressed a similar attitude as Bing Crosby sang:</p> <p>When I'm worried and I can't sleep <br>I count my blessings instead of sheep <br>And I fall asleep counting my blessings <br>When my bankroll is getting small <br>I think of when I had none at all <br>And I fall asleep counting my blessings</p> <p>As I looked at the snow, felt the coldness, experienced the wind, and drove through the extreme slowness of the traffic, I chose to count my blessings, and to enjoy the journey of being blessed by Him. </p> <p>I embraced this winter season.</p> <p>Can you embrace the winter season of your life? My favorite part of his show has always been his Monday night "Head lines."</p> <p>But in this blog, I want to mention something that sounds similar, but plays out much differently:</p> <p><strong><u><em>Deadlines.</em></u></strong></p> <p>Deadlines are those things that many of us hate and yet, others of us love.</p> <p>The deadline is that final moment when all must be said and done ... And all must be turned in and submitted.</p> <p>As I said, many hate these things. For those of us, these bring unneeded stress and pressure. These have driven men and women to do things they would later regret or to live in such a manner that one's life could be shortened or caused to be less than full.</p> <p>And other people love deadlines. For those of us, deadlines bring something similar to an adrenaline rush ... And cause greater and more concentrated focus of attention and on detail.. Somehow, the need to finish by a certain time causes that time to be a motivator.</p> <p>We all respond differently to deadlines.</p> <p>But I want to suggest to each of us that deadlines are nothing to be played with. In fact, we each have an appointed time when life as we know it will all be over and all will have been said and done.</p> <p>For that reason, I urge each of us to respond more intently to that focus of the journey of our life.</p> <p>Our journey is not about what we have done right or wrong. It's not about what we have planned and dreamed. And it's not about what we have succeeded in or failed.</p> <p>Instead, it's about how we have lived. It's about how we love God. It's about how we treat others.</p> <p>As Martin Luther King Jr. has said (and others have repeated):</p> <ul> <ul> <li>It's not about how long you have lived ... <li>It's about how well you have lived. </li></ul></ul> <p>And Hillary Cooper once said,</p> <ul> <ul> <li>Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take <li>But by the moments that take our breath away. </li></ul></ul> <p>So I ask you today as you live, as you breathe and as you enjoy the journey:</p> <ul> <ul> <li>How have you loved God? <li>How have you treated others? <li>How have you lived and forgiven yourself? </li></ul></ul> <p>Answer those questions before the deadline is upon you </p> <p>... while you still have time to do something about them ... </p> <p>While you have time to truly love and honor God ...</p> <p>While you have time to show and tell those whom you love that you really do love them ...</p> <p>While you have time to stop beating yourself up for all your shortcomings and failures ...</p> <p>While you have time to forgive yourself and to love yourself ...</p> <p>You know the time I'm talking about ...</p> <p>I'm talking about that time ...</p> <p>Before the deadline is up.</p> Pastor Jim Garretthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02199732060877174381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19837903.post-64649582762457218312014-04-06T20:07:00.001-07:002014-04-06T20:07:37.818-07:00Bumper Sticker Religion<p><b></b></p> <p><font size="3"></font> </p> <p><font size="3">We have a lot going around of what I call “Bumper Sticker” Religion. By this, I mean we tend to fill our lives with short, snappy statements that really sound good and really seem to make sense.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Such statements include: “John 3:16”, “Forgive and Forget”, “Let go and let God.” Of course, there are a whole lot of other, similar statements.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Obviously, few things are rarely as simple as they seem.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Surely, “John 3:16” is a simple statement that refers to the Scripture and is somewhat separated from these others but it is my fear that other such statements often do more harm than good.</font></p> <p><font size="3">I want to set the record straight.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Faith in Jesus is the beginning; faith in short, pithy statements is often a distraction.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Relationship with God is not initiated with cuteness and conciseness of communication; instead, relationship begins with revelation from God Himself and that revelation comes through prayer and/or the Word of God.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Relationship takes intentionality and some degree of work. And by work, I don’t mean accomplishment and defeating the impossible; what I do mean is that series of efforts of knowing Him.</font></p> <p><font size="3">(Of course, we could never get this part right on our own; we need His strength and His grace.)</font></p> <p><font size="3">And we are further equipped with the knowledge that as we draw hear to Him, He draws near to us. (And that’s the effort I’m talking about: drawing near.)</font></p> <p><font size="3">Never rest upon the concept that uttering the right words is enough.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Never rely on the thought that the summation of spiritual healthiness is achieved by a bunch of verbal gymnastics.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Instead, let us each draw near to God … let us establish a habit of I have always been pretty good at working with other people and have also found myself able to find a place of commonality with almost everyone.</p> <p>One of my techniques is that I always look for some “in” in each person’s life, whether it is the manner of dress during the depth of winter, military clothing that they might be wearing indicating that they might have been actively involved in the armed services, to unfamiliar accents to … well, you get the idea.</p> <p>Recently, a young lady came in on a Sunday morning.</p> <p>After eating, she came to my register to check out. </p> <p>Her bill was $12.83.</p> <p>She paid me in all one-dollar bills.</p> <p>So I, using my “skill” in finding an “in” to create conversation AND by the fact that I was working in the food preparation business, came to the following conversation:</p> <p>So I am guessing that you are a waitress/server.</p> <p>Again, I am just looking for friendly conversation.</p> <p>And she, looking at me … but quickly turning away to leave, says “No. I am a stripper.” … leaving my dropped-jawed.</p> <p>The moral of this story is that we should assume NOTHING of ANYONE.</p> <p>Each of us is who each of us is. Elijah was on the run from the evil Jezebel for his obedience to God concerning the false prophets. He took off on a journey into the wilderness. The angel of the Lord directed him to go and stand on the mountain. It is here that Elijah deals with earth, wind and fire. As Elijah stood on the mountain, a great wind came that was so strong that it broke the rocks of the mountains into pieces. We all have been in storms and experienced issues of life where it seemed that everything around us was falling apart. The Bible says the wind <i>“broke the rocks into pieces”</i> but notice it also says<i> “but the Lord was not in the wind.”</i></p> <p>As Elijah continued to stand on the mountain, an earthquake occurred; like so many of us the storms of life rage around us and as we are shaken pieces of our lives fall around us. We may begin to lose our footing and find ourselves in a state of panic. If the storm itself were not enough, now the very foundation of our lives is moving, unsteady. The Bible says <i>“but the Lord was not in the earthquake….”</i></p> <p>And finally there are the fires that spring up in life; the small sparks as well as the uncontrollable blazes; those issues that may test our patience as well as our perseverance. For pastors, it sometimes seems that congregations have several “small fires” burning throughout the church at all times. Despite your wise counsel and fervent prayer, Sister XYZ married the guy who could not even spell “LORD”, and now she and her “husband” are having marital difficulties. THERE IS A FIRE BURNING. Deacon XY has been way out of order in his duties; the congregants are beginning to notice so you must deal with him. THERE IS A FIRE BURNING. The pipes burst in the church from the cold weather and Trustee Y doesn’t have the “time” to handle the business to have it repaired therefore service may have to be canceled or moved to another location and it’s Friday. THERE IS A FIRE BURNING. The Bible says “the Lord was not in the fire.”</p> <p>Throughout the earthquake, the wind, and the fire the Lord was not in any of them. But in verse 12 it says <i>“a still small voice”</i> was where He could be found. When you are faced with the trials and issues of life you must position yourself in a place to hear that still small voice of God. Your building/temple of your physical body may be breaking into pieces with the foundation of all you have ever known shaking around you, fires and flames hot against your face but the Lord can be heard in that still small voice if you seek Him. </p> <p>Notice where Elijah was when this happens, he was on a mountain alone; by himself. When was the last time you went away by yourself to seek the face of God? It could be somewhere in your own home that is peaceful and quiet free of distractions or for pastors it could be at the church. The Lord told me that He wants to speak to you while you try and handle the earth, wind and fires in your life. But when He speaks you MUST recognize HIS voice!</p> <p>So be encouraged even during your storms, the earthquakes and fires of life that the Lord is <b><u>still there</u></b> yet take a lesson from Elijah and go to that quiet place and meet God there. </p> <p>Concentrate on the last sentence of this letter. It is all about preparing us ... maturing us ... completing us. Because ALL processes always contain pressures of some kind. At least we call these pressures ... pressures, tests, trials, and all sorts of other things. And these pressures are painful … but necessary for God’s work to be completed in us … and I assure you, God’s “begun” work will be brought to be a “completed” work. Philippians 1:6 reminds us, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (NLT) </p> <p>Be reminded of thee things: The process ALWAYS requires obedience and sacrifice. The process always requires testing. And you, too, will be used of God to bless the world. </p> <p><strong>Life Principle: </strong>Stay in the process, obedient and faithful. You will see how God used the process to prepare you and use you and mature you and complete you. And God's plan for you will prosper in the process ... both His Kingdom plan and His personal plan for you. </p> <p><strong>Life Principle: </strong>The diamond is a very beautiful stone. It required much time, intense heat, and great pressure. And its worth is valued by all ... Not just those who shop at Jared's or similar jewelers. As a small stone is valued only after it has passed through the long time, the extreme pressure, and the intense heat, so our true value is revealed only after the time, the pressure, and the heat of the process. Trust the process. </p> <p>So a Biblical truth is now revealed: God takes His children through the process. Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>Yet their lives were extremely uncomfortable. </p> <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:12- “But there are some Jews-- Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego-- whom you have put in charge of the province of Babylon. They pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They refuse to serve your gods and do not worship the gold statue you have set up." </p> <p>Daniel 3:14- “Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you refuse to serve my gods or to worship the gold statue I have set up?”” Daniel 3:16-17- “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>And we just need to notice that sometimes the process is uncomfortable. Trust the process. </p> <p>But let’s move on: these young men were willing to die in the process. </p> <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:18- “But even if he doesn't, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up." (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>So you see, dying to self is part of the process. We must trust the process ...even as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did. In in their lives, God’s plan prospered in the end </p> <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:24-25- “But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, "Didn't we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?" "Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did," they replied. "Look!" Nebuchadnezzar shouted. "I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!" Daniel 3:28-29- “Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king's command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. Therefore, I make this decree: If any people, whatever their race or nation or language, speak a word against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, they will be torn limb from limb, and their houses will be turned into heaps of rubble. There is no other god who can rescue like this!" So Satan left the LORD's presence.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>And Job was so intent on serving God that he was willing even to die in the process. </p> <blockquote> <p>Job 13:15- “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.” (NIV)</p></blockquote> <p>But the again, as did Abraham and the three Hebrew children, the Kingdom of God prospered in the end, Job prospered in the end, and you, too, can prosper when the process is over. </p> <blockquote> <p>Job 42:10- “When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes. In fact, the LORD gave him twice as much as before!” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>Or consider for a moment one of Jesus’ closest followers, the one called the Beloved: John the disciple also faced the process. It, too, was an uncomfortable process. Historians tell us that he was boiled in oil. He was later exiled to a prison island called Patmos. And through the process, God’s Word, written by the hand of this “man in process” went out to the Kingdom of God. And it’s still enlarging the Kingdom of God. Have you ever heard of the Gospel according to John or the Book of Revelation? Some reliable theologians and historians say this same John wrote 1, 2, and 3 John as well. And it will, in all probability, be an uncomfortable process. There may even be a sense of “death” in the process. It required much time, intense heat, and great pressure. And its worth is valued by all ... Not just those who shop at Jared's or similar jewelers. As a small stone is valued only after it has passed through the long time, the extreme pressure, and the intense heat, so our true value is revealed only after the time, the pressure, and the heat of the process. Trust the process. <p>So a Biblical truth is now revealed: God takes His children through the process. We know them as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Let’s look at what the Bible tells us about them: <blockquote> <p>Daniel 1:6- Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were four of the young men chosen, all from the tribe of Judah. <p>Daniel 1:19- 20- “The king talked with them, and no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the royal service. Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>Yet their lives were extremely uncomfortable. <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:12- “But there are some Jews-- Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego-- whom you have put in charge of the province of Babylon. They pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They refuse to serve your gods and do not worship the gold statue you have set up." <p>Daniel 3:14- “Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you refuse to serve my gods or to worship the gold statue I have set up?”” Daniel 3:16-17- “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>And we just need to notice that sometimes the process is uncomfortable. Trust the process. <p>But let’s move on: these young men were willing to die in the process. <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:18- “But even if he doesn't, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up." (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>So you see, dying to self is part of the process. We must trust the process ...even as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did. In in their lives, God’s plan prospered in the end <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:24-25- “But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, "Didn't we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?" "Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did," they replied. "Look!" Nebuchadnezzar shouted. "I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!" Daniel 3:28-29- “Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king's command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. Therefore, I make this decree: If any people, whatever their race or nation or language, speak a word against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, they will be torn limb from limb, and their houses will be turned into heaps of rubble. There is no other god who can rescue like this!" (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>The three Hebrew children prospered in the end ... as did God’s entire plan and Kingdom. <blockquote> <p>Daniel 3:30- “Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to even higher positions in the province of Babylon. (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>The Biblical character Job also faced the process. <blockquote> <p>Job 1:8- “Then the LORD asked Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless-- a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil." "Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don't harm him physically." So Satan left the LORD's presence.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>And Job was so intent on serving God that he was willing even to die in the process. <blockquote> <p>Job 13:15- “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.” (NIV)</p></blockquote> <p>But the again, as did Abraham and the three Hebrew children, the Kingdom of God prospered in the end, Job prospered in the end, and you, too, can prosper when the process is over. <blockquote> <p>Job 42:10- “When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes. In fact, the LORD gave him twice as much as before!” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p>Or consider for a moment one of Jesus’ closest followers, the one called the Beloved: John the disciple also faced the process. It, too, was an uncomfortable process. Historians tell us that he was boiled in oil. He was later exiled to a prison island called Patmos. And through the process, God’s Word, written by the hand of this “man in process” went out to the Kingdom of God. And it’s still enlarging the Kingdom of God. Have you ever heard of the Gospel according to John or the Book of Revelation? Some reliable theologians and historians say this same John wrote 1, 2, and 3 John as well. Some kind of dying will go on in the process. Choose to stay in the process. But it is working in you something great. <p>So truly, the process is always for His good … and for our good as well. Again, I like to remember that passage in Jeremiah 29:11- “For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (NLT) <p>We, too, either are facing the process or right in the middle of it. And it will, in all probability, be an uncomfortable process. There may even be a sense of “death” in the process. But we should remember those famous words of Job 13:15- “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.” (NIV) And we will prosper in the end ... as will His Kingdom. <blockquote> <p>Romans 8:28- “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (NLT)</p></blockquote> <p><strong>Life Principle: </strong>The process is preparing you ... Read and be challenged … then pass it on.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>Sandra felt as low as the heels of her Birkenstocks when she pulled open the florist shop door, against a November gust of wind. </p> <p>Her life had been as sweet as a spring breeze and then in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a "minor" automobile accident stole her joy. This was Thanksgiving week and the time she should have delivered their infant son. She grieved over their loss. Troubles had multiplied. Her husband's company "threatened" to transfer his job to a new location. Her sister had called to say that she could not come for her long awaited holiday visit. THEN! Sandra's friend suggested that Sandra's grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. </p> <p>"She has no idea what I'm feeling," thought Sandra with a shudder. </p> <p>"Thanksgiving? Thankful for what?" she wondered. "For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life, but took her child's?" </p> <p>"Good afternoon, can I help you?" Sandra was startled by the approach of the shop clerk. </p> <p>"I....I need an arrangement," stammered Sandra. </p> <p>"For Thanksgiving? Do you want the beautiful but ordinary, or would you like to challenge the day with a customer favorite I call the 'Thanksgiving Special'? I'm convinced that flowers tell stories," she continued. "Are you looking for something that conveys 'gratitude' this Thanksgiving?" </p> <p>"Not exactly!" Sandra blurted out. "In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong." </p> <p>Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the clerk said, "I have the perfect arrangement for you." </p> <p>Then the bell on the door rang, and the clerk greeted the new customer, "Hi, Barbara...let me get your order." </p> <p>She excused herself and walked back to a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and what appeared to be long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped: there were no flowers. </p> <p>"Do you want these in a box?" asked the clerk. </p> <p>Sandra watched for the customer's response. Was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers? </p> <p>She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed. </p> <p>"Yes, please," Barbara replied with an appreciative smile. "You'd think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn't be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again." She said, as she gently tapped her chest. </p> <p>Sandra stammered, "Ahh, that lady just left with, uh....she left with no flowers!" </p> <p>"That's right, said the clerk. "I cut off the flowers. That's the 'Special'. I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns Bouquet." </p> <p>"Oh, come on! You can't tell me someone is willing to pay for that!" exclaimed Sandra. </p> <p>"Barbara came into the shop three years ago, feeling much as you do, today," explained the clerk. "She thought she had very little to be thankful for. She had just lost her father to cancer; the family business was failing; her son had gotten into drugs; and she was facing major surgery." </p> <p>"That same year I had lost my husband," continued the clerk. "For the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too much debt to allow any travel." </p> <p>"So what did you do?" asked Sandra. </p> <p>"I learned to be thankful for thorns," answered the clerk quietly. "I've always thanked God for the good things in my life and I NEVER questioned Him why those GOOD things happened to me, but when the bad stuff hit, I cried out, "WHY? WHY Me?!" It took time for me to learn that the dark times are important to our faith! I have always enjoyed the 'flowers' of my life but it took the thorns to show me the beauty of God's comfort! You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we're afflicted and from His consolation we learn to comfort others." </p> <p>Sandra sucked in her breath, as she thought about the thought that her friend had tried to tell her. "I guess the truth is, I don't want comfort. I've lost a baby and I'm angry with God." </p> <p>Just then someone else walked in the shop. "Hey, Phil!" the clerk greeted the balding, rotund man. "My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving arrangement...twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!" laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator. </p> <p>"Those are for your wife?" asked Sandra incredulously. </p> <p>"Do you mind telling me why she wants a bouquet that looks like that?" </p> <p>"No...I'm glad you asked," Phil replied. "Four years ago, my wife and I nearly divorced. After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord's grace and guidance, we trudged through problem after problem. The Lord rescued our marriage. Jenny, here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she had learned from "thorny" times. That was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific "problem" and give thanks for what that problem taught us. </p> <p>As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra, "I highly recommend the Special!" </p> <p>"I don't know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life." Sandra said to the clerk. Remember, it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love. Don't resent the thorns."</p> <p>Tears rolled down Sandra's cheeks. For the first time since the accident, she loosened her grip on her resentment. </p> <p>"I'll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please," she managed to choke out. </p> <p>"I hoped you would," said the clerk gently. "I'll have them ready in a minute." </p> <p>"Thank you. What do I owe you?" </p> <p>"Nothing. Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart. The first year's arrangement is always on me." The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra. "I'll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you would like to read it first." </p> <p>It read: </p> <p>My God, I have never thanked You for my thorns. I have thanked You a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to You along the path of pain.
